Fair incumbent comparison
Different tools solve different parts of the evidence problem.
PDF and established legal systems have deep installed bases, workflows and institutional familiarity. UD proposes a portable document substrate that carries more inspectable state and provenance.
| Question | Assessment | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Exact-state integrity | UD ADVANTAGE | UDS verification is carried with the document; signed PDF can also provide cryptographic integrity when correctly implemented. |
| Installed base and court familiarity | INCUMBENT STRONGER | PDF, document-management and eDiscovery systems have established workflows and broad institutional familiarity. |
| Revision lineage inside the document | UD ADVANTAGE | UDR is designed to carry revision lineage; many incumbents keep it in surrounding platforms. |
| External custody controls | BOTH | UD can record declared events, but procedures, witnesses, access controls and independent records remain essential. |
| Bates/production identity as structured data | UD PLANNED | Existing utilities stamp Bates numbers; a canonical legal-identity extension is not yet standardized. |
This comparison does not claim court acceptance, admissibility, replacement of eDiscovery systems or superiority in every workflow.
