Why Are Documents Still Dumb in the AI Age?
We gave applications increasingly capable AI, but the files moving between people still lose structure, policy, revision context and trust evidence. Universal Document asks what should travel with the document itself.
The “aha”
Adobe can make a PDF smart inside Adobe. Microsoft can make a Word document smart inside Microsoft. Google can make a Google Doc smart inside Google. Universal Document is designed so intelligence-ready structure, provenance, revisions, integrity, policies and portable behavior can belong to the document architecture itself.
This is not a claim that PDF or DOCX are not standards, or that UD invented document chat. It is a design choice about where durable document meaning and behavior live.
What changes when structure travels
The document can remember change
A UDR records new revisions rather than silently overwriting prior history. Editing Policy states what kind of participation is allowed.
The document can expose evidence
A UDS carries canonical integrity and signature evidence. Signature validity, key trust, identity, time, current status and transparency remain separate checks.

Two states, one lifecycle
UDR remembers change. UDS proves finality. UDR is living and revisable. UDS is a sealed selected state; an amendment starts a new UDR rather than editing the sealed source.
What UD does not claim
UD does not claim every Reader contains AI, every generated answer is correct, the format is tamper-proof, or a signature automatically proves identity or legal effect. Conversation sources, citations, processing location and every trust state must remain explicit.
